Incense Burner

16th century (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This piece was used as an incense burner. It is made of copper, a malleable metal which metalworkers could decorate using the same sophisticated techniques they employed on silverware. Here the metalworker has hammered from the back of the metal to create the embossed or repoussé design of scrolling foliage.

During the period 1500-1600, when this piece was made, Italian metalworkers decorated copperwares with rich decoration that usually covered the whole surface of the object. The decoration on this burner is in the Mannerist style that first appeared in Italy in the 1520s.
