The style of this inkstand suggests that it was made by a French sculptor familiar with the work of the Italian goldsmith and sculptor Benvenuto Cellini. Cellini was in Paris between 1540 and 1545. The fleur-de-lis pattern and the stars can be seen in textile decoration of the period.

Physical description

A figure of a woman in clinging drapery reclining on a rectangular base. Her right arm is round the inkwell which is in the form of a drum ornmented in relief with a frieze of semi-human figures, the bodies terminating in leaves. In front is an elaborate coat of arms.
