Object history | The title of the design comes from the scenes in two medallions, one representing Minerva (France) protecting the infant Hercules (America) from the attack of a leopard (England), with the inscription 'non sine diis animosus infans 1777 oct.17, 1781 oct.19'. The other, ornamented with a symbolic head, has the inscription 'libertas americana 4 juil 1776'. |
