This relief representing Judith with the head of Holofernes was probably made in the middle of the 16th century South Germany. This is carved in mother of pearl and set in a silver mount.

Physical description

Judith, a stalwart figure, stands facing right. Her hair is tightly bound beneath a wide hat. She wears a doublet puffed out at shoulders and elbows and flowing skirts. In her right hand she grasps a broad-bladed sword, in her left Holofernes' head. There is a background of stars, and the marginal inscription: JUDITH MOIES IA.

The relief is convex. The silver mount at the back forms a large openwork T with coiled serifs engraved with flowers. On the silver margin is scratched I.A.H.L.
