Scene from the Passion, mother of pearl relief, South German, late 15th century
Physical description
Christ has fallen to his knees while proceeding to the left; he looks back towards a soldier and Simon of Cyrene who supports the stem of the cross. On the right are two other soldiers wearing doublets and trunk hose, one menacing Christ with his fist, the other pulling on the rope. Other soldiers are seen behind, some mounted, they carry spears, the ladder and the sponge. On the top edge appears some houses and the two other crosses lying on Calvary.
