The Nativity, mother of pearl relief, South German, late 15th century
Physical description
Relief in mother of pearl. The Virgin kneels on the left, looking down at the Child who lies in a wicker cradle. Joseph holding a staff stands on the right under the tiled porch of the large stone built stable. This extends across the background and has a tower and a door on the left. In the centre the ox and ass look out through windows. On the extreme left two shepherds approach.
