The brown glaze covering this Choson period (1392-1910) porcelain bottle is made from rusted or burnt iron which was applied directly onto the porcelain body. Iron-brown was a popular pigment also for painting designs on white porcelains. This technique, known as ch'olhwa, was also commenly used in celadons of the Koryo period (918-1392). Ch'olhwa white porcelain was manufactured thoughout the Choson dynasty, but was especially popular in the 17th century.
