This medallion portrays Ulrich Friedrich Guldenlöwe (1638-1704), who was Graf zu Laurwig und Jarlsberg, Edelherr zu Herzhorn, Herr auf Callöe and Statthalter in Norway. He was a Knight of the Order of the Elephant and wears the Order round his neck in this portrait. The artist, Jean Cavalier, was itinerant and specialised in ivory. He worked in Denmark, Bavaria, Brunswick, Stockholm and London; he probably died in Persia (Iran). This medallion is signed IC and dated 1693, and was almost certainly executed when he was in Copenhagen.

Suggests Cavalier was a Huguenot expatriated after the edict of Nantes. Refes to the medallion of Samuel Pepys in the Pepys-Cockerell Collection, which implies that he was in London in 1680. After his travels in Russia and Persia, he returned in 1700 to Stockholm. Later worked at Cassel. Last heard of in 1707.
