Tile
ca. 1800-1850 (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
From the 17th century onwards, tilework became a typical feature of the Dutch home. Painted tiles, such as this example featuring a cavalryman, provided an ideal surface for decorating areas of walls prone to dirt and damp, the latter being a common problem in the canal-side houses of the Dutch cities. Tiles were therefore used around fireplaces, on wainscots, along corridors, and most particularly around skirtings.
