A young woman, probably Lady Florence Emily Hesketh

Portrait Drawing
1880 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This portrait probably celebrates the marriage in 1880 of Florence Emily Sharon, daughter of the Senator of Nevada, to Sir Thomas Hesketh. The bride is seated in front of a vase of lily-like flowers, one of which she tucks into her elaborate tresses. Lilies are traditional symbols of purity. On her wrist is a bangle in the form of a snake, an allusion to the Fall of Eve but also to fertility. Sandys was a better draughtsman than painter. This example demonstrates his unusual skill with coloured chalks.
