'American and European Art and Design 1800-1900'
Rookwood pottery, founded in 1880 as an amateur concern by a potter, Maria Longworth Nichols, was soon partly staffed with paid employees, some from the Art Academy of Cincinnati, others from England and Japan. Inspired by the English Arts and Crafts movement, it allowed its decorators free rein, never forcing them to copy patterns. Early products were stoneware inspired by French art pottery but in 1893 pastel colours were introduced. This vase, shown at the Paris 1900 Exhibition, was purchased from Siegfried Bing's shop, L'Art Nouveau, which handled Tiffany's products.(1987-2006) |
