  • Label for 'American and European Art and Design 1800-1900', Gallery 101, de-canted March 2017: '19 Dish About 1900 In 1895 Petronella van Rijn decided to establish a new pottery on the site of her late husband's fireproof-brick factory. Initially, she produced earthenware, but she quickly moved on to more adventurous designs. This dish shows Brantjes pottery at its best, with floral designs in Art Nouveau style. The Netherlands, Purmerend; manufactured by Weduwe N.S.A. Brantjes & Co.; design probably taken from the pattern books of Eugène Grasset Earthenware, painted Museum no. Manufacturer Holland (Purmerend): about 1900 Earthenware with painted decoration C.100-1967 The Brantjes factory was established in 1895 by Petronella Eleonora Maria Clementina van Rijn (1849-1917), the widow (Weduwe) of Nicolaas S. A. Brantjes, on the site of her husband's fireproof brick factory. Her associate in this venture was Egbert Estie (1865-about 1910) who left three years later to begin the Zuid-Holland factory at Gouda. The Brantjes factory was established in 1894-5 by Petronella Eleonora Maria Clementina van Rijn (1849-1917), the widow (Weduwe) of Nicolaas S.A.Brantjes, on the site of her husband's fireproof brick factory. Her associate in this venture was Egbert Estié (1865-about 1910) who left three years later to begin the Zuid-Holland factory at Gouda.
