Carpet design template, or 'vagireh'. Contains sections of the borders and field designs of several carpets and would have been used by weavers to record not only designs but also colour combinations from which to weave complete carpets.
DESIGN: Outer border: Left-hand side, bottom and bottom right and top left: dark red ground with angular pink and grey meander, with a variety of flowers and upper right hand corner. Right-hand side: dark blue ground with stylised multi-coloured blossoms.
Inner border: white zigzag on the main border ground with inward facing triangles and squares.
Main border: Left-hand side and bottom: blossoms framed by an angular double meander. Right hand side: dark red ground with naturalistic posy with an inner border of stripes; the innermost is reciprocal. There is a corner compartment and a central compartment with a similar posy on dark blue ground.
Field: in 4 parts:
1) to the right on a dark blue ground is a row of naturalistic blossoms;
2) top centre is a quarter of a diamond medallion with stylised pink flowers on red ground;
3) bottom left is a similar quarter medallion with jagged edge and part of a pointed spot. The outer ground is pink. There is part of a pink pendant above.
4) the central diagonal section has dark blue ground filled with angular stems and crude blossoms with a large pink and dark blue rosette.
KNOTS: 11 per inch vertically; 8 per inch horizontally;
KNOTS per 10 cms - vertically 43, horizontally 30.

PILE: wool; 15 colours: dark red, red, orange, yellow, dark green, green, dark blue, blue, dark pink, pink, light pink, brown, black, grey and white; symmetrical knot tied around 2 threads; 80 knots to the sq. inch (1200 per sq. dm).
SIDE FINISH: one cord oversewn with dark red wool.
END FINISH: both have 3 cms plain weave turned under and roughly sewn with white cotton. |
