Object history
The distinctive headdress worn by the horsemen allows this textile to be dated with a degree of confidence; the high hat with four points and a scarf around the bottom is associated with the reign of Nadir Shah Afshar (reigned 1736-1747) and the Afsharid dynasty. Following Nadir's death there followed a period of economic and political instability in Iran and it seems improbable that a textile of such quality and containing so much metal thread would have been produced during this time. Therefore a production date of 1736 to 1747 is most likely.
