Production
Of this set of designs, Hayward states that "The second set was more ambitious. It consisted of fifty-two plates illustrating 'Glass, Picture, and Table Frames, Chimney Pieces, Gerandoles, Candle-Stands, Clock-Cases, Brackets, and other Ornaments in the Chinese, Gothick, and Rural Taste'. It first appeared in book form, without a title, in 1758. It was then re-issued in 1761, with one additional plate, as One Hundred and Fifty New Designs." (Hayward, Helena, 'Newly-discovered Designs by Thomas Johnson', Furniture History, Vol. 11 (1975), pp. 40-42.)

It is clear, however, from counting the plates in this 1758 volume and from the numbers etched on the plates, that there are 53 not 52 plates of etched designs. Furthermore, the 1761 re-issue has 52 not 53 plates plus four title plates.
