Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Three-dimensional textile and wax portrait of Sir Roy Strong. Various textiles, hand-sewn, embroidered and painted. A front view of a cluttered three-dimensional half-portrait of Sir Roy Strong in a glass case framed in painted wood branches with relief animals and insects. Sir Roy is shown wearing a sleeveless jumper over a white shirt with a red bow tie. He is holding a model of the V&A in his left arm and a favourite cat, the Reverend Wenceslas Muff (known as 'Muff'), in his right, a large black cat wearing a medallion of Shakespeare. A ribbon runs from hand to hand with 'SIR ROY STRONG' embroidered on it. Beneath his right arm are book spines embroidered with titles by Sir Roy: 'The Renaissance Gardens in England' and 'Art and Power'. There are two versions of a Renaissance garden behind the figure of Sir Roy, left and right. Back proper left is an Italianate circular, hedged and paved garden with statues. Back proper right is a grass garden pathway, lined with flower beds and box trees leading up to an Elizabethan red brick house. The abundant branches of a large fruiting tree separate the two gardens. The whole portrait is framed with flowers in pale pinks, reds, yellow and white. A pair of running shoes hang in the top proper right corner and an image of Elizabeth peeps out from the bottom proper left.
