Place of origin

This caricature shows Ian Fleming as Gabriel Service in C.L. Anthony's play Service at the Brighton Theatre Royal on 28 August 1933. It was drawn by Gilbert Sommerlad (1904-1976), a rehearsal pianist and orchestral violinist at the Brighton Theatre Royal from 1932 until 1936, and at the Oxford New Theatre from 1936 for over forty years. Sommerlad sketched the stars on stage when he wasn’t needed in the orchestra pit, compiling the sketches in a series of albums.

Service was a play about a genteel department store called Services. It ran at Brighton as part of the post-London tour, billed as 'Basil Dean's latest success from Wyndham's Theatre' where it opened in October 1932 with Leslie Banks and Ann Todd as Gabriel and Caroline Service.
