Tiles for use in the construction of closed wood-burning stoves were produced in large quantities in Germany. From around 1500, these usually took the form of rectangular panels with decoration in relief. This example is decorated with a figure emblematic of Faith, and is from a series of tiles depicting the Virtues and Liberal Arts.
