Place of origin |
This caricature shows Percy Hutchison (b.1875) as Larry Deans in The Green Pack at the Brighton Theatre Royal on 15 August 1932. It was drawn by Gilbert Sommerlad (1904-1976), a rehearsal pianist and orchestral violinist at the Brighton Theatre Royal from 1932 until 1936, and at the Oxford New Theatre from 1936 for over forty years. Sommerlad sketched the stars on stage when he wasn't needed in the orchestra pit, compiling the sketches in a series of albums.
In 1932 and 1933 the actor Percy Hutchison toured in England, Canada and the United States in Edgar Wallace's play The Green Pack. Hutchison was a well-established actor by then, having started his stage career in 1888 with his mother's company, and going on to play numerous parts in the West End and the provinces. In the late 1890s he spent three years as stage manager at the Criterion Theatre for his uncle, Sir Charles Wyndham, and went on to become lessee of the Opera House, Southport and the Theatre Royal, York.
