This caricature shows Nora Delany as Elizabeth Moulton Barrett in The Barretts of Wimpole Street at the Brighton Theatre Royal on 19 May 1932. It was drawn by Gilbert Sommerlad (1904-1976), a rehearsal pianist and orchestral violinist at the Brighton Theatre Royal from 1932 until 1936, and at the Oxford New Theatre from 1936 for over forty years. Sommerlad sketched the stars on stage when he wasn't needed in the orchestra pit, compiling the sketches in a series of albums.
The Barretts of Wimpole Street by Rudolf Besier was originally produced by Barry Jackson at the Festival Theatre, Malvern, in August 1930 and transferred to the Queen's Theatre in London in September with Gwen Ffrangcon-Davies as Elizabeth and Scott Sunderland as Robert Browning. It ran in London for over a year, and due to its success Barry Jackson organised a regional tour of the play with a different cast. It came to Brighton in 1932 for a week commencing 16 May, with Nora Delany as Elizabeth.
