BASE OF A FOUNTAIN Mosaic of coloured marbles SYRIAN (probably Damascus); 17th -18th century Fountains such as this were used in the chief rooms of the houses of the wealthy in Syria and Egypt. The water, sent from one or more jets sets round the side of the basin, would cool and humidify the air.(Used until 11/2003)
