The qipao was traditionally the costume of the Manchu people, and the style was adopted by Chinese women from the Qing Dynasty. By the twentieth century the shapes and styles of the traditional dress were changing. Neat, slightly waisted jackets paired with above-ankle skirts were prevalent in the 1920s.

This is a woman's jacket made of turquoise and gold silk woven with a design of fir trees. The edges are trimmed with a narrow applied edging, and the jacket is fastened with traditional loop and knot fastenings.

Physical description

Woman's side-fastening short jacket of turquoise-blue silk satin with a self-patterned fir tree design (supplementary weft of yellow-green). The garment is shaped at the waist; and curved at the hemline. It has slightly flaring long sleeves and a high stand-up collar. The jacket fastens on the right side with 5 loop and knot buttons fashionnd in leaf shape. There is a slit at both sides of the jacket (approximately 15 cm long). It has a blue damask silk lining. The garment has narrow pink and green applied edging. This style was in fashion in the 1920s.
