The qipao was traditionally the costume of the Manchu people, and the style was adopted by Chinese women from the Qing Dynasty. By the twentieth century the shapes and styles of the traditional dress were changing. Neat, slightly waisted jackets paired with above-ankle skirts were prevalent in the 1920s.
This is a woman's jacket made of turquoise and gold silk woven with a design of fir trees. The edges are trimmed with a narrow applied edging, and the jacket is fastened with traditional loop and knot fastenings.
