This lace border commemorates the accession to the Spanish throne of Charles II. He became king in 1665 at the age of three. The inscription reads CA SECO REX HPA. It is reversed in some areas both as part of the design and because of the way the lace is constructed. This type of Flemish bobbin lace was the height of fashion in both clothing and furnishing in the middle of the 17th century.
