Place of origin |
Chertsey Abbey in Surrey can be associated with an exceptionally fine group of medieval floor tiles. These were initially produced as complex tile-mosaic, though the designs were later adapted for more standard tile shapes. Originally the tiny roundels and foliate sections of the design of this tile were produced as separate mosaic elements. The roundels contain a lion and gryphon, along with the heads of a king and a bishop or abbot.
