This unfinished drawing shows the roadway
of a bridge Sandby designed to cross the
Thames at a point just downstream of
Somerset House. The roadway is shown
flanked by a screen of Ionic columns. Also
on the Bridge were huge domed buildings,
the concept bring similar to one worked
out by Piranesi. The design was shown
at the Royal Academy in 1781, when it
attracted much comment. Sandby, one of
the original Royal Academicians, was the
R.A.'s first Professor of Architecture. From
1770 to his death he delivered an annual
series of six lectures on the subject
Drawings of the Bridge of Magnificence
were used to illustrate the sixth one each
year.
