Physical description

‘Reading by Lamplight’, etching by James Whistler, ca.1858. Signed by the artist in plate bottom right. Portrait of the artist’s half-sister, Deborah Delano (1825-1908) in a domestic interior. She is shown in profile, turned to the right, sitting within a circle of light cast by the lamp at right, holding an open book close to her face.
