Breast cloth worn as a scarf hung from the neck over the breasts.

Rectangle formed with two lengths (W. 17 cm) with cross looped knit join along the weft edge. Ground of dark blue/black warp and weft . Narrow supplementary weft weave intersperced with knots and beads on long sides. With two colour red and white weft float. Ends decorated with a fringe of orchid fibre.

A dark blue breast cloth with fringed ends possibly worn by a woman of the Khumi ethnic group. A Chin people from western Rakhine State, Burma. Distinguished by patterns in supplementary and float weave in red and white and knots and beads on the long sides. c. 1850

Object history
Two colour weft float as shown in this garment is also found amongst the Kachin people of Burma.
Production
1880 Slip book states that this garment was received from Arracan in 1855. Further information from David W. Fraser, The Textile Museum of Washington D.C., 2003 attributes it to a Chin group from the western part of Rakhine State possibly the Khumi ethnic group.
