This low-slung, black and gold satin and velvet evening coat has a deep, shawl collar, which can be used as a hood, and long sleeves. It wraps over to a low waist fastening with a huge black button. The abstract motifs are obtained through the process of 'devoré' velvet.
Paul Poiret had popularised evening coats before the World War I. They followed the changing silhouette of the 1920s, and had become shorter by 1925. This evening coat is a beautiful example of the influence of Art Deco style on fashion, with its geometrical motifs and modern shape.

| Object history | When the donor, Isabelle Mazzitelli (who is now a fashion design tutor) visited the Museum, 1st August 2007, she asked to see this coat. This coat was her absolute favourite of all the vintage garments that in her teenage years/early 20s she collected and wore in the 1960s and early 70s. |
