Painting

18th century (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Painting, in opaque watercolour on paper, a head and shoulders portrait of a lady in profile facing left and holding a petal in her right hand. She is shown within the curve of a narrow inverted crescent moon at the lower edge against a grey circular background. The lady is bedecked in jewellery and wears a golden chaghatai headdress (originally of Mongol origin in design) which is ornamented with gemstone jewels, pearls and a green flying bird. She has a yellow shawl with a sprigged golden design edged in red thrown across her shoulders which reveals a glimpse of the pearl edging to her pink tuck-edged choli or blouse underneath.
The image is set within a golden frame with a delicately painted outer border of red flowers and scrolling tendrils set within white margins. The inner frame has spandrels of scrolling flowers and tendrils as well: of a violet colour in the upper part and multi-coloured below.
There is also an outer green frame with lotus-bud decoration in gold similar to that on the opposite page, (IS.48:13/B-1956), with white, gold and black outlines and an outer blue line . It also shares the same design for the page margin and border as the opposite page with a row of alternate pink lilies and red poppies picked out in gold on an ivory-coloured ground. The margins of the page are embellished with strips of buff-coloured paper with a white line ruled along their inner edges. A beige-coloured strip of paper has been added along the left hand side of the border to act as a gutter for the album binding.

Object history
This miniature painting is part of the Small Clive Album of Indian miniatures which is thought to have been given by Shuja ud-Daula, the Nawab of Avadh, to Lord Clive during his last visit to India in 1765-67. It contains 62 leaves on which are Mughal miniature paintings, drawing and flower studies on both sides. The binding is covered with an Indian brocade silk that may have been cut from lengths brought home by the 2nd Lord Clive, who served as Governor of Madras, 1799 to 1803. The album was sold from Powis Castle at Sotheby's sale, 16 to 18 January 1956, lot 332A.
