This cross-shaped tile from Iran would have been fitted in combination with eight-pointed stars and upright crosses, building up a tessellating pattern to cover the whole wall. Within this system of organised geometry, the surface design shows a flowering plant painted in gold, with plant tendrils curling behind it.

Tile, fritware painted in overglaze enamels and gold leaf (mina'i ware), Iran (probably Kashan), early 14th century
Physical description
Tile in the shape of a cross, fritware, decorated in the overglaze technique known as mina'i (from the Persian meaning 'enamelled'). The background is turquoise, and is decorated in gold leaf with a vertical stem which branches into the right and left arms of the cross. The background is decorated with spirals and tightly curled leaves in a black pigment.
