Candlestick

ca. 1700 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Most European candlesticks of the mid 17th Century had circular bases. Spanish and Portugese candlesticks with square bases were therefore rather distinctive. This example dates from about 1700 and was made in Spain. It is of brass and has a square base set on four claw feet. Heavily cast bases made candlesticks stable, an important factor in wooden buildings and rocking ships where there was an ever-present risk of fire.
