Gate Cresting

ca. 1700 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Crestings such as this were a common element of ironwork gates and screens, and provided an opportunity for an elaborate display of the blacksmith's skill. Ironwork of this type is very rarely dated; once a piece has been removed from its context the only means of attribution is stylistic. The scrolled foliage has a Baroque exuberance despite its delicacy, which, combined with the quality of the workmanship, make this cresting typical of the ironwork of South Germany.
