Tom Phillips drew and painted this design in 1978. It is one of a series of five designs for the St Catherine's Wheel Tapestries. They hung in the Hall at St Catherine's College, Oxford. Phillips was a graduate of the College. He based this design on the wheel on which St Catherine of Alexandria was martyred in the 4th century. The Edinburgh Tapestry Co. wove the tapestries, which were completed in 1979.

Physical description
A vertical design of overlapping wheels. The wheels in the centre are in blues and greys. The wheels at the bottom centre and at the sides are in darker browns than the upper wheels which are in autumnal russet browns. The wheel have been drawn by using a compass because there is a compass mark in the centre of each circle.

This design is one of a series of five for the three tapestries which were designed by Tom Phillips, a graduate of St. Catherine's College, Oxford and made under his direction by the Edinburgh Tapestry Company Ltd., Dovecot Studios, Dovecot Road, Edinburgh. This design is based on one of the versions of the legend of St. Catherine of Alexandria. St. Catherine was martyred in the 4th Century. The design shows the St. Catherine wheel motif. The tapestries were for the Hall at St. Catherine's College.
