18th century (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

The painting, in opaque watercolour on paper, shows a flowering plant with dentated leaves and two orange flowers in full bloom and one opening flower and a bud on which a blue and mauve spotted butterfly has alighted. Another similar butterfly flies above the plant. Two small leafy plants sprout along the lower edge at either side. The painting has been extended and a further three leafy plants added along with a brown and green washed ground. The main plant is painted directly onto the plain off-white ground of the paper. The flowers and buds are painted orange with the detailing produced by hatched lines in red. The leaves are treated in the same manner with a pale green ground over which outlines and veining are hatched in with a darker tone.
The painting is framed with strips of grey paper outlined with black ruled lines and laid on the plain ivory-coloured main border. This is edged with strips of buff-coloured paper and two inner black ruled lines. The right hand side has a strip of beige woven textile stuck along its length to act as a gutter for the album binding. Th edges of the page have been gilded.

Object history
This miniature painting is part of the Small Clive Album of Indian miniatures which is thought to have been given by Shuja ud-Daula, the Nawab of Avadh, to Lord Clive during his last visit to India in 1765-67. It contains 56 leaves on which are Mughal miniature paintings, drawing and flower studies on both sides. The binding is covered with an Indian brocade. This silk may have been cut from lengths brought home by 2nd Lord Clive who served as Governor of Madras, 1799 to 18803. The album was sold from Powis Castle at Sotheby's sale, 16 to 18 January 1956, lot 332A.
