This altarpiece panel illustrates one of the 15 signs that were believed to precede the Last Judgement. This panel illustrates the Fifth Sign which describes how trees will give forth blood. Other panels from this altarpiece not owned by the V&A include the Sixth Sign describing how buildings will collapse, the Tenth Sign describing how people will lose the power of speech and the Thirteenth Sign describing how the living shall die to rise again.
