Boxes like this one were made for jewellery, trinkets or other personal effects. This particular box was designed by Hartwig Fischel for his wife, Minnie Fischel, around the time of their marriage in 1902. Its geometric design, with a stylised monogram 'MF', would have been very avant-garde. It was meant to harmonise with the other fashionable furnishings and fittings that Fischel designed for their first Viennese apartment.
