Place of origin |
A design for a pier-glass in pencil, ink and grey wash on paper, in a transitional style where neoclassical forms and motifs have been adopted. At the top and centre of the pier-glass frame, the mask of Apollo is situated amongst a sunburst and is surmounted by imagery associated with the arts such as music scores, paintbrushes and an artist's palette. Apollo's lyre is also positioned in amongst these motifs. A festoon of acanthus buds hang beneath Apollo's mask and attach to two vases either side of the central decorative arrangement. The vases surmount two plinths which are asymmetrical in detail. Underneath Apollo, the frame is arched and decorated by a hanging lambrequin pattern. Interlaced palm leaves and floral ornamentation are positioned on top of what would be the mirror glass. The sides of the frame are decorated with two male bearded masks underneath which are lengths of acanthus buds. The acanthus buds terminate with larger leaves on top of plinths with paterae in the centre. Underneath the mirror frame are two goat's heads at either end. Festoons and scrolling foliage are also incorporated, in the centre of which is a large leafy form.
