Place of origin |
A design for part of an overmantel in pen and ink, yellow and blue wash on paper. One half of the mirror glass and frame are shown in full and coloured with wash while the faint pencil outline of the rest of the frame can also be seen. Underneath the frame the outline of a fireplace is displayed. The frame is surmounted by a vase from which an arrangement of flowers droop down onto the top of the frame. The outline of the frame is composed from curvaceous natural forms such as acanthus leaves and foliate arrangements. Candles are also present within this arrangement, two of which are positioned in front of the mirror glass while the other is positioned outside of the frame. The carved details are with a yellow wash to indicate gilding while the glass is coloured with a blue wash. The inner rectangular frame is left bare and the overmantel terminates above the fireplace with a decorative border.
