Physical description

Invitation to Lord and Lady Boyle from the first Duke of Wellington to a Coronation Ball at Apsley House on 28th June 1838. The invitation is on gilt-edged paper, folded to form the invitation on the inner side, the envelope on the outer. Inside, the text of the invite is printed in black ink, with the name of the recipient added by the hand of the Duke. Outside, the Duke has written the name and address of the recipient; a red wax seal stamped with the emblem of the Garter, two post marks in brown ink and a large '3' in black ink are also present. The text of the invitation runs as follows: 'Field Marshal the Duke of Wellington / presents his compliments / to / Lord and Lady Boyle / and request the honor of their Company at a Ball on Thursday, / the 28th. of June. / As it is the day of Her Majesty's / Coronation, the Duke requests that / the Officers of the Navy and Army / will come in Uniform. / Apsley House.'. On the reverse, the address is written: 'The / Viscountess Boyle / Palace Hampton Court / 83 Jermyn St [struck though]'.
