Clothing Ensemble

1992 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Rifat Ozbek's eclectic designs are often inspired by ethnic and historical styles and the London club scene. The design of this long, full-skirted coat was inspired by Russian military wear and illustrations from fairy tales set in winter. It is trimmed with ikat silk braiding, which is much used on Central Asian clothing, and features buttons with moulded sun motifs.Turkish-born, London-based Ozbek is noted for his use of vivid colours and ornamentation on classic silhouettes, drawing on diverse cultures for inspiration. This ensemble opened Ozbek’s Autumn/Winter runway show in 1992 – the same year he was awarded ‘British Designer of the Year’ by the British Fashion Council for a second time. The collection featured Ozbek's reimagining of classic men's tailoring, the cut and ornmentation recalling military uniforms; unexpected flourishes came in the form of colour-blocked velvet and feather adornments, with looks further feminised by the juxtaposition of a body-conscious bottom-half, achieved via leggings, high-waisted shorts, or slim-fit pencil skirts.
