The distinctive pointed fur hat identifies this man as a Persian, as he sits in a kahvehane or coffee-house with a nargile or water-pipe. Customers used to bring their own tobacco and amber mouthpiece, but the shop provided the rest of the equipment for smoking, including a piece of glowing charcoal for the tobacco bowl.
