Place of origin |
Many of the coffee-houses or kahvehanes doubled as barber shops. Some people preferred to have shaven heads beneath their turbans or headgear, and, judging by the kind of hat beside him, the Armenian in this picture is taking advantage of this service. A mirror on a stand and other items of equipment are clearly visible on the shelf. An inhabitant of Constantinople could go to his favourite place of resort, take coffee, talk with his friends, smoke, be shaved and listen to a story or music, all for a trifling sum.
