There were a large number of Persian merchants in Constantinople in Preziosi's time, many of them staying at the 'Persian Han' or caravanserai where they would indulge in the Persian sport of ram fighting with specially bred heavy-weight rams. This man is wearing the tall lambswool hat typical of these merchants.
