As Russia expanded its empire in the 19th century, and invaded the Caucasus, a number of Circassians took refuge in the Ottoman lands. This warrior has the typical fur hat or kalpak, and a distinctive greatcoat or cherkesska, fitted with a row of cartridge cases in holders across the chest
