The tradition of using luxury materials for formalwear remained well in place at the end of the 20th century. Bruce Oldfield designed this evening coat in finest white silk velvet. The coat’s extravagant mink collar is a luxurious addition to a deceptively understated cut, and is an example of the glamorous eveningwear that Oldfield has become known for. Oldfield trained at Ravensbourne College of Art in the early 1970s, launching his own label in 1975. He began designing couture garments in 1978. In 1980, he was awarded the OBE for his services to the fashion industry.

Labels and date

Romantic and sensuous fashions are Bruce Oldfield's forte. This feminine double-breasted coatdress has a plunging neckline, emphasised by a deep fur collar. The gently gathered, slightly trained skirt falls from the waist, which dips at the back. The strength of the garment lies in its understated cut and the designer's skillful use of luxurious materials [1997]
