Ward-Jackson, Peter, Italian Drawings Volume II. 17th-18th century, London, 1980, pp. 190-191. The text is as follows: VENICE: early 18th century 1218 St Andrew holding his cross, half length, in an oval medallion Inscribed in ink ‘Pietro Liberi fecit’; Inscribed by a different hand (in ink) ‘448’ Pen and ink and wash over red chalk 6 3/8 x 5 1/8 (162 x 130) E.864-1916 PROVENANCE Illegible stamp in black ink, probably a coat of arms; ? George Augustus Sala (according to the Museum’s List of Accessions for 1916); given by Arthur Myers Smith, 1916 Formerly ascribed to Pietro Liberi, in accordance with the inscription. Few drawings by Liberi are known. One is illustrated in K. Parker, Disegni veneti di Oxford, Venice (Cini Foundation), 1958, fig. 72: another is I. Fenyö, North Italian drawings from the Budapest Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest, 1965, p. 120 and pl. 89. Our drawing is not by the same hand. Indeed, they style suggests that it is later in date. It looks like an eighteenth century drawing somewhat in the manner of Gaspare Diziani.
