Roger Fenton (1819–69) Lichfield Cathedral, West Porch About 1858 The decoration of the archway, the drapery of the sculptures and the patterned surface of the door suggest the solidity of this building. The two figures posed in the doorway emphasise its size and grandeur. Fenton photographed buildings starting with a general view which included its surroundings. He then worked steadily inwards to concentrate on specific features, as seen here. [60 words] Albumen print Museum no. 320-1935
