This full length portrait of an adolescent boy is taken from Rineke Dijkstra's (born Sittard, Netherlands, 1959) series of portraits taken on beaches in Poland, England, Belgium, Ukraine and Croatia between 1992 and1996. Taken in Ukraine, it is typical of the series. The backdrop is devoid of any distinguishing landmarks and shows only minimal indications of the landscape.
Dijkstra said when making this series, "I discovered that the young people and children were the ones I had been looking for. I noticed that teenagers are very self conscious and find it difficult to find a pose."
