This full length portrait of an adolescent boy is taken from Rineke Dijkstra's (born Sittard, Netherlands, 1959) series of portraits taken on beaches in Poland, England, Belgium, Ukraine and Croatia between 1992 and1996. Taken in the Ukraine, it is typical of the series. The backdrop is devoid of any distinguishing landmarks and shows only minimal indications of the landscape.
Dijkstra said when making this series, "I discovered that the young people and children were the ones I had been looking for. I noticed that teenagers are very self conscious and find it difficult to find a pose."

Object history note

This photograph is from a series produced by Rineke Dijkstra from 1992-1993.

Historical significance: Dijkstra's Beach series has received critical acclaim since its production. Jalta, Ukraine, 29 July, 1993 is a previously unpublished image from the series. Rineke Dijkstra has selected it for the V&A in recognition of the important standing of the Museum's photography collection. This is an example of Dijkstra's early work. She has since gone on to produce series of work featuring young male bullfighters in Portugal, mothers and their new-born babies and adolescent clubbers in Liverpool.

Historical context note

The body of work that this photograph belongs to confirmed the currency of a 'Germanic' portraiture style within contemporary artistic production.

"While making the beach series, I discovered that the young people and children were the ones I had been looking for. I noticed that teenagers are very self-conscious and find it difficult to find a pose. A documentary moment is important to me, although I make sure that all details that might inform the viewer about a specific site are kept out of sight. Sometimes I observe people for a while - nearly always its love at first sight. It's important that I recognise something of myself in them."
