Historical context | Andrew Bush’s Bonnettstown series records the decaying elegance of a country house in Ireland which Bush visited for two years in the early 1980's, having met its owners by chance whilst hitchhiking in Europe. He has said, "I realised I had found a great subject in the remnants of a European aristocratic lifestyle, in four elderly people living together in the deteriorating splendour of a glorious estate." Bush focusses on objects normally ignored or taken for granted, such as the cord of a lamp or the dial of a thermostat. Human presence and emotion are suggested through the marks made on such objects by their habitual and daily use. |
