Place of origin

Dramatic paintings of this type are sometimes known as 'Paithan' paintings, after the place where they were first collected. In fact, they are probably the work of the Chitrakathi (story-painter) community in rural parts of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra. Usually illustrating local folk tales or epics such as the Ramayana, they would accompany the singing of these tales at night.
